relevant 是甚麼意思？
relevant (to sth)

＝ 相關的、切題的、有關係而且有用的
寫 essay、找資料、做專題和寫 CV 都常用。relevant 不只是「有關」，還暗示「對現在的目的有用」，所以老師評語寫 "not relevant"，就是說你離題了。
簡單解釋
你在寫一篇關於香港空氣污染的文章，一份關於倫敦交通的報告大概 not relevant（不相關）；一份環保署的數據就很 relevant。
relevant 的重點是「和眼前的問題扣得上，而且有用」。和題目扣不上的內容，寫得再好也是 irrelevant。
介詞永遠用 to：relevant to the question、relevant to my project。

常見錯誤
✗ This data is relevant with our topic.

relevant 後面用 to，不用 with；香港學生常受 related with 影響（其實 related 也是用 to）。

relative 是「相對的；親戚」；「相關的」是 relevant。
✗ This point is unrelevant.
✓ This point is irrelevant.
反義詞是 irrelevant，不是 unrelevant 或 inrelevant。

指累積的工作經驗時，experience 是不可數名詞。

- 刪去 Facebook 的歷史和 Zuckerberg 有多富有：這些資料 irrelevant，題目問的是影響，不是歷史。
- relative functions 用錯字，relevant with 用錯介詞 → highly relevant to teenagers’ lives。另外，副詞「每天」要分開寫 every day。
- 每句都扣回題目（睡眠、和朋輩比較），這就是 essay 的「切題」。

常見問題
relevant 和 related 有甚麼分別？
related 只表示兩件事有關係；relevant 表示它和你現在的問題扣得上，而且有用。一份資料可以 related to your topic，但如果太舊或太籠統，未必 relevant to your research question。
怎樣令 essay 內容保持 relevant？
每段開首用主題句回應題目；寫完一段問自己："Does this help answer the question?" 背景資料只寫必要的部分；結尾句要扣回題目的關鍵字，例如 "the extent to which" 或 "impact on teenagers"。
討論時想說「這和我們的題目有關嗎？」，怎樣問才禮貌？
可以說 "Is this relevant to our question?" 或較柔和的 "I’m not sure how this relates to our topic. Could you explain?" 這樣既提出疑問，又給組員機會解釋。
"the relevant authorities" 是甚麼意思？
指「有關當局」，即負責該事務的政府部門或機構。新聞和官方文件常見，例如 "The matter has been reported to the relevant authorities."
