考試題目、評分準則和學術文章都常見。看到題目用 assess，就不能只描述，要權衡正反、作出有理據的判斷。
簡單解釋
醫生替你檢查，判斷傷勢有多嚴重，就是 assess 你的傷勢。
在學術上，assess 是「量一量」某事物：有多重要、有多大影響、做得多好，然後給出判斷。
名詞是 assessment（評估、評核）。香港的 SBA 就是 School-based Assessment（校本評核）。

access（使用、進入）和 assess（評估）讀音相近，香港學生經常混淆。

assess 是及物動詞，後面直接加受詞，不用 about。

- assess about whether → assesses the extent to which：assess 後面不加 about；配合題目用 the extent to which，顯示你會判斷程度。
- solve totally 太絕對；ease（紓緩）較準確，也留空間討論限制。housing problem 前要加冠詞或所有格，many flat 要用複數。
- 加入 While…, its success also depends on…，在引言已經顯示你會權衡兩面，這正是 assess 題目的要求。

常見問題
assess 和 evaluate 有甚麼分別？
兩者經常可以互換。細微分別是：assess 偏向量度程度或影響（assess the impact, assess the risk）；evaluate 偏向判斷價值或成效（evaluate a policy, evaluate your own work）。在題目裡，兩者都要求你作出有理據的判斷。
assess 和 access 怎樣分辨？
assess /əˈses/ 是評估；access /ˈækses/ 是使用、進入，例如 access the internet、have access to resources。記法：access 有 cc，像 "come in"（進入）。
寫 "Assess the extent to which…" 的 essay 有甚麼結構？
常見做法：引言清楚表明立場（例如 "to a large extent"）；正文分段討論支持和反對的論據，每段都回到「程度」；結論總結判斷和理由。重點是全文都有判斷，不是到結論才突然表態。
assessment 可以數嗎？
可以。指一次考核或一份評估時是可數的：two assessments this term、a risk assessment。指一般的評核制度時則常當不可數用：continuous assessment、school-based assessment。
