factor 是甚麼意思？

＝ 因素、影響結果的其中一個原因
DSE 和大學 essay 分析成因時必用。說「某事的因素」要用 in：a factor in success，不是 a factor of success。
簡單解釋
一個結果往往不只有一個原因。每一個參與造成結果的原因，就是一個 factor。
例如考試成績好，可能有幾個 factors：溫習時間、睡眠、老師、心情。其中最重要的，就是 the key factor。
數學上，factor 是「因數」：2 和 3 都是 6 的 factors。這是少數用 factor of 的情況。

常見錯誤
✗ Hard work is an important factor of success.
✓ Hard work is an important factor in success.
「某事的因素」用 a factor in sth；factor of 只用於數學（4 is a factor of 12）。
✗ There are many factors affect the result.
✓ There are many factors that affect the result.
一句不能有兩個主要動詞；要加 that 引出關係子句，或改成 Many factors affect the result.
✗ The main factor is because of the high rent.
✓ The main factor is the high rent.
factor 是名詞，後面直接接名詞；is because of 在 essay 中是常見的冗贅寫法。
✗ We need to factor the weather.
✓ We need to factor in the weather.
解作「計算在內」時，factor 要配 in，是片語動詞 factor in。

- many factor cause → Several factors contribute to：factor 要用複數；用 contribute to 一個動詞就夠，不需要 cause 再加子句。
- The first factor is because of → One key factor is：刪去 because of；不一定要用 first / second，One key factor… another important factor 讀起來更自然。
- factor of the low birth rate → 刪去重複部分：factor 不配 of；同一段已說明是出生率，不用每句重複，並補上一句解釋，把因素和結果連起來。

常見問題
factor 和 cause 有甚麼分別？essay 中用哪個？
cause 是直接造成結果的原因；factor 是眾多影響之一。社會議題通常有多個原因互相影響，所以分析時用 factor 較準確、較審慎，例如 "Several factors contribute to…"。如果你確定是直接原因，才用 cause。
寫 essay 時怎樣用 factor 組織段落？
可以每段寫一個因素：主題句用 "One key factor is…" 或 "Another factor that…"，然後給證據和解釋，最後一段比較各因素的重要性，例如 "Of these factors, housing is the most significant."
a factor in 和 a factor for 可以互換嗎？
一般用 a factor in sth。在醫學和健康文章中，常見 a risk factor for sth，例如 Smoking is a risk factor for heart disease。所以 risk factor 配 for，其他情況多用 in。
數學的 factor 和 essay 的 factor 有關係嗎？
有。在數學中，因數相乘得出結果（2 × 3 = 6）；在 essay 中，多個因素合起來造成結果。兩個意思都是「組成結果的部分」。
