Write it yourself, then learn to write it better

Do your essays repeat the same words, or sound a little unnatural? Dictionify will not write for you. It shows you how your own sentences could be better, and marks every change so you can learn from it.

How Dictionify helps with writing

1

Polish your own draft

When you finish a paragraph, select it and press Polish. Dictionify suggests a more natural, more accurate version. Removed words are crossed out and new words are highlighted, so you can accept or ignore each change. The goal is to understand why it changed, not to copy it.

2

Pick a better word with examples

Not sure a word is right? Double-click it. Press 💬 Examples to see it in real sentences, or ⇄ Similar/opposite words to see words with close or opposite meanings. Choose the one that fits best, and stop using the same word again and again.

3

Academic word pages and linking words

This website explains academic words like significant, analyse, evidence and approach, each with examples, common mistakes and a quiz. The essay linking words guide gives 40 linking words in example sentences, so your structure is clear.

A writing routine

  1. Write the whole first draft yourself, without any tools. Focus on your ideas.
  2. Read it once. Check that each paragraph has a topic sentence and that the links between paragraphs make sense.
  3. Double-click any word you are unsure about. Check the examples and similar words, and replace words that repeat or do not fit.
  4. Polish one paragraph at a time. Look at each change and keep only the ones you understand and agree with.
  5. Copy the three most useful changes into a notebook, and try to use them yourself in your next piece.

Common problems and how to fix them

ProblemMy sentences sound translated from Chinese

FixCommon examples are pay more attention on (it should be to) or People are more and more rely on. Polish your sentence and see how it is rewritten. Then double-click unfamiliar words and read the 💬 Examples to see how English speakers say it. Reading examples helps more than memorising rules.

ProblemI use the same word all the time

FixFor example, important or good in every paragraph. Double-click the word and open ⇄ Similar/opposite words. Be careful: similar words are not always the same. Significant means it has a big effect; essential means you cannot do without it. Check an example before you swap.

ProblemI use linking words wrongly, or too often

FixCommon mistakes are starting every sentence with Moreover, using Besides in formal writing, and writing Although… but…. Use the essay linking words guide to choose by purpose: adding, contrasting, cause and effect. If the link between two sentences is already clear, you may not need one.

ProblemI make grammar mistakes I cannot see

FixCheck the three most common ones yourself first: subject and verb (he think should be he thinks), tenses, and uncountable nouns (evidence and information do not take s). Then use Polish and notice what it corrects again and again. That is the grammar you most need to practise.

A weekly practice plan

15 minutes a day

Write 80 to 100 words in English, for example about today’s news. Polish it, look at the changes, and note one new thing you learned.

One full essay a week

Write an exam-style essay with a time limit. Check it yourself, then Polish it paragraph by paragraph. Compare your draft with the changes and list your repeated mistakes on the first page of your notebook.

Before the exam

Review the mistakes and useful sentence patterns in your notebook, and read the linking words guide again. You cannot use tools in the exam, so practise writing and checking on your own.

FAQ

Is using Polish on my essay cheating?

Polish only improves sentences you wrote yourself. It does not write homework or whole essays, and every change is marked. Schools have different rules about AI tools, so check what your teacher allows before you hand in work, and say which tools you used if you are asked.

How can I get a better score in English writing exams?

Content, organisation and language all count. Give each paragraph a clear topic sentence, link your ideas with suitable linking words, and avoid repeated words and basic grammar mistakes. The best way is to write often, find the mistakes you keep making, and fix those first.

How do I stop writing Chinglish?

Do not plan the full sentence in Chinese and translate it word by word. Read English examples and learn whole phrases, like pay attention to or have an impact on, then use them as they are. After writing, use Polish to see how it would be said in natural English.

How do I find a better word in an essay?

Double-click the word you want to change. Open ⇄ Similar/opposite words to see your options, then 💬 Examples to see each one in a sentence. Similar words can differ in meaning and tone, so always check an example first.
